Blog #5: Corpora, Concordance, Collocations, Word Frequency

#Check out the following sites and report back on how they could be used to inform materials development and classroom instruction.

1.Compleat Lexical Tutor
This website is managed by Tom Cobb, and the aim of this website is for date-driven language learning on the Weblear. When I saw this website first time, I was a bit confused. Because I thought it was not organized well. However, as I tried to search for something using this website, I felt that it is really useful for learners, researchers and teachers.
It has many tests for learners, so learners can check their level form time to time. And also it has a bunch of vocabularies about many parts. In the researchers part, I entered to range home. I typed 'weather', and then a lot of expression came out.
And in 'teachers' part, I-D word identification quiz looked very interesting. The benefit of this part is challenging amusement, integrates form ,meaning, invites look at multi contexts.

2. THE CORPUS OF CONTEMPORARY
AMERICAN ENGLISH (COCA)
*The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) is the largest freely-available corpus of English, and the only large and balanced corpus of American English. The corpus was created by Mark Davies of Brigham *

I found this site very useful and interesting. Because once I type some words in searching tab, it can come out a variety of vocabularies. For example, I wrote down the word 'eyes', and then I could know thousand of sentences. I think it is helpful, especially when I need to say or write down something. Above all, it contained a vareity kinds of reading materials, such as spoken, fiction, magazine, newspaper, and academic. Thus, when we are searching for specific expression of some words, it can be really helpful for us to know.

3.Wordle
**Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends. **

As it says in front page, Wordle make us have 'word clouds'. We can make our own fancy word cloud using many variety of words. There is no limitation. We can mix up the words into very unique features like heart, question mark and so on. We can not only make just simple clouds but also very memorable features that have deep meaning. Actually I tried to make my own 'word cloud', it was really fun and interesting. With my favorite words, I could get my own word feature. I was surprised with it, and I definately would like to recommend to my friends and teachers as well.
